Law Firms

The University of Melbourne Archives holds records from 20 Victorian law firms.

The University of Melbourne Archives holds records from twenty Victorian law firms. The records begin from the earliest days of the colony and range geographically from suburban Melbourne to Port Fairy, Portland, Warrnambool and Beechworth. These collections predominantly contain client files: contracts; mortgages; leasing documents; wills and probates; marriage settlements; inventories and memoranda and articles of association of companies. Some files run over several generations of families and provide an interesting commentary on social and business history.

For information about using UMA’s law firm records, see Information for Researchers or contact the Archives.
