The Asia Leaders Scholarships will be offered to international students from Asia commencing the Melbourne Juris Doctor (JD) in 2018.

The Melbourne Law School Yao Yi and Xu Bin Asia Leaders Scholarship will support students from China Mainland commencing the three-year Juris Doctor degree.

The Melbourne Law School Charles-Lim Capital Asia Leaders Scholarship will be available to commencing JD students from Brunei, Cambodia, China Mainland, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Scholars will receive $25,000 AUD per year over three years (totalling $75,000 AUD) and will gain first-hand experience in Australian, Asian and international affairs and legal issues through a range of extra-curricular opportunities including mentoring and internships.

Melbourne Law School Dean Professor Carolyn Evans said the scholarships reflect the Law School’s efforts to further strengthen relations between Australia and Asia.

“The scholarships present a significant opportunity for us here in Australia to deepen our engagement with our near neighbours,” she said.

"With the help of their world-class legal training and broad international perspectives, it is hoped that future scholars will become leaders in their communities and advocates for closer Asia-Australia ties.”

The scholarships were established through the generosity of Charles-Lim Capital Limited and alumni donors Yao Yi (LLM 1996) and Xu Bin (LLM 1999).
