Project Workshop
International Law and the Blue Economy Workshop
7-8 May 2026
Workshop aims
International law’s role in the blue economy was the topic of this two day workshop bringing together outstanding researchers from Asia, Africa, north America and Oceania at Melbourne Law School. Hosted by ARC Future Fellow and IILAH Director, Professor Margaret Young, the workshop explored rights, responsibilities, growth, harm prevention, restoration, legal pluralism and the duty to cooperate, among other foundational concepts. Sectors and themes crossed between fisheries, shipping, seabed mining, ecosystem restoration, decarbonisation, marine genetic resources, blue finance, amidst custom and treaty obligations to protect the climate system. Participants (pictured here) are now working to convert their draft papers into a joint research output, to be published in 2027.
