In a context where structural and geopolitical challenges are manifest, governments, business, markets and communities all need to respond to long-term trends. The law has a unique role to play in accelerating or creating obstacles to progress. The nature, role, capacity and accountability of organisations will be affected by the confluence of technology, changing context and social norms. Through what promises to be time of significant disruption, the Hub will address a modular combination of themes with a view to identifying legal and regulatory solutions to key challenges facing 21st century organisations.
Our scope
The substantive focus of the Hub will incorporate a modular combination of themes including the following:
- corporate purpose and modernisation of Australian corporate law to enable companies and their directors to pursue purpose plus profit as well as broader purposes
- technological innovation and the impact of the digital economy on laws governing organisational models and practices, including the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on governance and decision-making
- corporate and governance responses to environmental, social and governance issues, climate change and the growing focus on impact, including implications for directors’ duties
- productivity and the imperative for new value creation and for resilient organisations in an era of significant social and political disruption, structural adjustment and technological change
- corporate stewardship and related issues, including finance , investor engagement, corporate accountability and sustainability
- law and regulation and the changing landscape for standards, disclosures and accountability
- broader issues of governance and society including challenges for a rapid and just climate transition, changing elements of global business and how they affect business and finance
Our activities
The Hub’s activities will be built out over time to bring together academics, policy makers, industry and civil society to help shape future-fit organisations through:
- A robust global research program, including inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary research
- Engagement with stakeholders to identify opportunities for research impact and to co-design solutions
- Dialogue with, and submissions to, government and policy makers to influence legal and regulatory reform
