JD electives

Students can choose from extensive selection of electives each year, including a range of enrichment opportunities and an elective from the Melbourne Law Masters program.

JD quota electives

During the timely re-enrolment period, students nominate their preferred JD quota electives by enrolling in subjects via my.unimelb. If you do not meet the subject prerequisites, then you will need to obtain a prerequisite waiver prior to enrolment.

All timely elective nominations are subject to a selection process, which the Academic Support Office will perform after the timely re-enrolment period closes.

Students will be advised which subject nominations have been approved (as the subject quota was not met) and which subjects have been taken to a selection round (as nominations exceeded quota).

During the selection round for over-quota subjects, where possible, priority enrolment will be given to students:

  • With 125 credit points or less remaining in their degree, and/or
  • With 12.5 credit points remaining in their degree, who have nominated a Summer subject

In cases where priority student demand exceeds quota, randomised selection of priority students will occur; meaning not all priority eligible students will receive a place in their preferred electives. Should places remain after the prioritised allocation, randomised selection will apply for all remaining timely nominations.

Note: Being included in the priority pool does not guarantee you a place in any nominated elective.

Students will be notified, by email, of any subject nominations they were not successful in gaining a place in and will subsequently be withdrawn from those subjects by the Academic Support Office.

JD students can self-enrol into quota electives on a first-in basis (up to quota). Due to students swapping subjects, students are encouraged to continue trying to enrol to check subject availability, as places in previously full subjects may become available at any time.

Enrichment electives

Melbourne Law School offers a range of JD electives that provide enrichment opportunities to students through public interest law clinics, legal internship, global learning opportunities, moot competitions and as editors of law journals.

Each of these subjects has its own application process.

MLM electives

From mid-2021, JD students may apply to study up to 25pts (usually two subjects) of Melbourne Law Masters (MLM) subjects from the approved list as electives during their course.

JD students must confirm, via the subject's Handbook, that the teaching dates and assessment due dates of their nominated MLM electives do not result in clashes with their JD commitments, as well as confirming that they meet any subject prerequisites before applying.

Places for JD students within each approved MLM elective is limited (with spaces allocated on a proportional basis), and priority will be given to MLM students.

Approved applicants will be enrolled into their approved MLM elective by the Academic Support Office. Class registration is not required for MLM electives.

Timely applications will be subject to a randomised selection round. In the case of students submitting multiple applications, only the latest application will be assessed

Submitting an application does not guarantee enrolment in an MLM elective.

Late applications will be assessed on a first-in basis. In the case of students submitting multiple applications, only the latest application will be assessed.

Please note:

  • Waitlists are maintained for MLM electives, however priority will be given to MLM students.
  • This table identifies which MLM electives are available for further JD enrolments. The table is indicative only and is not updated in real-time (last updated 17 Sep 2021 9:07am).
